We often find ourselves asking, “Where can I get a juicy, delicious burger?” But rarely do we stop to ask, “How can I make one myself?”
So today, I’m sharing exactly how to make the perfect homemade burger right in your own kitchen. Now is the perfect time to make one!
First, let’s start with the ingredients for our home made burger:
-
Ground beef (80/20 ratio – 80% lean, 20% fat)
-
Salt & pepper
-
Burger buns (brioche or sesame recommended)
-
Cheese (optional: cheddar, American, Swiss)
-
Toppings (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles)
-
Sauces (ketchup, mayo, mustard, burger sauce)
-
Butter or oil (for toasting buns)

Here’s How It’s Done
1. Choose the Right Meat
-
Use 80/20 ground beef – this fat content gives you a juicy, flavorful patty.
-
Don’t over-handle the meat; form loose patties, about ¾ inch thick, slightly wider than the bun.
2. Season Simply
-
Season each side of the patty with salt and pepper just before cooking.
-
You can add garlic powder, onion powder, or Worcestershire sauce for extra flavor (optional).
3. Preheat Your Pan or Grill
-
Heat a cast-iron skillet or grill over medium-high heat until hot.
-
No need to add oil if the beef has enough fat.
4. Cook the Burger
-
Cook for 3–4 minutes per side for medium (adjust for your preferred doneness).
-
Press gently to create a good sear, but don’t flatten the patty (you’ll lose the juices).
-
Add cheese during the last 30–60 seconds of cooking and cover to melt.
5. Toast the Buns
-
Butter the inside of your buns and toast them on a pan or grill for 1–2 minutes until golden and crispy.
6. Assemble the Burger
-
Start with the bottom bun
-
Add a bit of sauce
-
Place the patty with melted cheese
-
Add toppings: lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles
-
Finish with more sauce and the top bun
7. Serve and Enjoy!
-
Serve immediately while hot.
-
Add fries, sweet potato wedges, or a cold drink for the full experience.
? Optional Variations:
-
Smashburger style: Press patties thin and cook quickly for crispy edges.
-
Stuffed burgers: Add cheese or toppings inside the patty.
-
Vegan/veggie: Use a plant-based patty and dairy-free cheese/sauces.
